IUI Process | Step By Step IUI Procedure - Medicover Fertility

IUI process (Intrauterine Insemination process) involves the transfer of processed sperm directly into the woman's uterus around the time of ovulation. It is also known as artificial insemination.
IUI is an effective option for many women or couples trying to get pregnant but cannot conceive naturally.

Preparing for an IUI Process

Before the IUI Process, your doctor will suggest to you some tests to ensure IUI is the right step for you.

These tests involve blood work to observe the regulation of your hormones, indicating your ovarian reserve. Furthermore, genetic blood work is also done to find out whether you’re a carrier of any particular disease.

The sperm – whether from your partner or a donor, will be analysed and hysterosalpingogram test (HSG) to ensure your fallopian tubes easily permit sperm to travel.

The best time for the IUI procedure is during ovulation. If you have ovulation problems, your doctor may prescribe medication to induce ovulation.

Moreover, women who undergo IUI treatment procedures usually have to have their ovaries stimulated beforehand to mature eggs and take a trigger shot to release one egg. Then, washed and concentrated sample of sperm is used for the insemination process.

IUI Procedure Step by step

IUI procedure involves the following steps-

Preparing the semen sample

Your partner's semen is first washed to separate the highly active, normal sperm from lower quality sperm and other unwanted elements to avoid the reactions in the woman's body that could hinder fertilization. Then a highly concentrated sample of healthy sperm is used in IUI to enhance the chances of pregnancy. This is the first step of IUI Process.

Ovulation Monitoring

The timing of IUI plays a vital role. Hence, monitoring for signs of approaching ovulation is important. Your doctor may also give an injection of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) or medications to help you ovulate one or more eggs at the right time. This is the second step of the IUI Process.

Optimal timing

Mostly IUIs are done a day or two post-detecting ovulation to enhance pregnancy chances.

Sperm Transfer

The doctor transfers a sample of healthy sperm through a long, thin, flexible tube (catheter) into the vagina during the procedure. This is the final step of IUI Procedure.

What To Do After The IUI Procedure?

After the IUI procedure, you lie on your back for a brief period. Once the IUI process is done, you can resume your usual daily routine. However, you may experience light spotting for a day or two after the process.

In Post IUI process, most  fertility experts  suggest eating a healthy diet, taking proper rest, staying positive, taking prescribed medicines on time, doing light exercise like yoga, and you can do meditation to keep yourself stress-free.

Is IUI Procedure Painful?

Most people think that the IUI procedure is painful. However, the reality is that the IUI procedure is not painful. It takes only a few minutes. Most women may experience slight discomfort due to the insertion of the catheter. However, this discomfort is temporary and goes by the end of the procedure.
