An IVF procedure is a life-defining moment for the ‘want to be’ parents. The months prior that have led up to this moment have been spent in the aspiration of this procedure. The next few weeks before the scan and the news that the IVF cycle was successful are filled with apprehension and excitement.
The physical state and well-being of the mother are very important at this time. Every couple takes the maximum precaution as they can. After going through so much, they desperately want the IVF procedure to succeed.
Ignorance about the precautionary measures that should be taken after IVF is quite common. Many patients ask their doctor about the precautions that they should take immediately after the procedure and till the next appointment. Even without their asking the doctors always list a number of safety measures that should be adhered to after the IVF procedure. At this moment, the success of the IVF procedure is of prime importance to the expectant couple and the IVF specialist.
There are a few things that should be avoided immediately after the procedure at least for a few days, like travel. It is not advisable for a patient to travel long distance by road or by train immediately after the embryo transfer. Strenuous activity should be avoided at all costs. A certain amount of activity is okay unless the doctor has advised complete bed rest. If the doctor has advised complete bed rest, then only obedience will result in IVF success. Patients who ignore the doctor’s advice could end up jeopardising their possible pregnancy.
Patients should refrain from any activity that will hamper the restful state of the body. At this stage, you wouldn’t want to negatively impact the embryo in any way, until successful implantation.
Proper sleep: Proper rest for the body is very important. A patient should ensure that she gets sufficient duration of sleep during the night. It is not just the duration of the sleep but the quality of sleep that matters as well. Restful sleep is important. Avoid staying up late, and try and sleep at a decent hour, latest by 10 pm. The occasional late night is okay, but as a general rule during your pregnancy, try and get to bed on time.
Healthy diet: Eating a healthy diet comprising of fresh fruits and vegetables is important during your IVF treatment period, after the IVF procedure and throughout your pregnancy. Refrain from drinking alcohol, cold drinks and caffeinated beverages. Stay away from processed foods and deep-fried foods. Junk food is a strict ‘no’. As far as possible, try and eat home-cooked food and abstain from eating food from outside. A diet rich in dairy products is good.
Workouts and exercise: Immediately after your IVF procedure, it is advisable to avoid working out. Especially workouts that are strenuous, involve lifting weights and aerobics should be avoided. If you have been regularly practising yoga, some light yoga postures that do not impact the stomach area can be practised. However, do not start yoga at this point if you were not doing it earlier. The first few days after the IVF procedure until implantation happens, it is better to put your yoga practice on hold.
It is also important to stay away from people who smoke to avoid inhaling second-hand smoke. Remain in areas that have pure, fresh and clean air. Inhaling pollution and toxic fumes can endanger your conception and lead to a miscarriage.
It is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure IVF success.
